We were discussing Bokeh - Myself, Rach, and a Pro shootingĬollegue who came to show me his new EOS30 + 24-85 "backup + Sheesh - you can tell that the rainy nights are drawing in can't I heard the blades are curved on the 70-200L IS and 24-70 to produce a near circular bokeh at f/4 or lower. Where can I go to find out how many blades lenses are? The EF canon site doesnt list it. That makes me interested in other lenses now. to be honest as a walkabout having a 5-blade iris won't kill an old 28-105, neither will using a 50mm F1.8 for portraits, product shoots or landscapes.

Just thought I'd share this - it passed an evening. the 28-135IS and 24-85 are six bladers, the 75-300-IIIUSM is a 7 and the 75-300IS is an 8 amazingly enough, even the cheapest of Sigmas are 8-blade. The test showed one thing - an 8 blade Iris produces very nice Bokeh, 5-blade is pretty horrible, 6 isn't much better.īoth of the Canon 50mm Mk1 primes are 5-bladers as are the 20-35USM, the 14, 20, 28 and 35mm Primes!!! - I would imagine that all of the old 35-XXX USM lenses are too.

The Early 28-105 Mk1s (with the flower icon instead of saying "macro" in writing like the later Mk1s and Mk2s) have 5 blade Irises, any 28-105 with "Macro" written should have a 7 blade Iris - This didn't bother me for the £140 I paid for it, i was more worried about condition and it being full of dust, it is mint and totally dust free unlike some nearly new Mk2s I've seen - there is virtually NO wobble either. Ignore the EXIF data, I used the first pic (the 28-105) as the base board for the rest. We were discussing Bokeh - Myself, Rach, and a Pro shooting collegue who came to show me his new EOS30 + 24-85 "backup + walkabout" body as I'm getting one and wanted to see it.Īnyway the Bokeh discussion got underway and I setup a test - the idea was to see what a difference the number of Iris blades made so here is the result. Sheesh - you can tell that the rainy nights are drawing in can't you.
